Varsity Wins 2022 National Entrepreneurship Competition Award

Enactus Ahmadu Bello University Undergraduate Team, Zaria becomes the National Champion of the 2022 National Competition Prize hosted by Enactus Nigeria, a leading international non-profit organization dedicated to youth leadership and skills development companies.

Tai Solarin University of Education team came second in the award category.

Despite the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) strike, over the past year, the Enactus team in Nigeria, comprised of undergraduate students from tertiary institutions from all backgrounds and disciplines , has invested time and other resources to develop and implement start-up social enterprises with great potential to empower individuals,

transforming communities, creating employment and wealth opportunities while improving the quality of life and standard of living of people in communities across the country.

The National Director of Enactus Nigeria, Mr. Michael Ajayi, said that “Like every other national competition that came before it, the Enactus Nigeria National Competition 2022 provided these

resourceful and dynamic students (Social Innovators) the opportunity to showcase the impact of their efforts over the past year to a panel of judges comprised of CEOs from leading corporate organizations in Nigeria.

He further stated that “a total of 16 Enactus University teams participated in this exciting and energetic event which was held in three stages. The opening round and semi-final took place as virtual events between July 26 and 28, 2022, while the final round took place as an in-person event attended by senior executives, students, lecturers and dignitaries in Nigeria, in Lagos in August. 30, 2022.

“At the end of the three stages of the Entrepreneurial Competition, Enactus Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria team with two most innovative and impactful social enterprises, namely, PUP Industries and Tompa, was named the Enactus Nigeria National Champion 2022 and will represent Nigeria at the prestigious international competition, the Enactus World Cup, to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico between October 30 and November 2, 2022.”

Plastic Up-cycled Products (PUP) Industries is a social enterprise tackling plastic waste in the immediate environment, in Kaduna State, Nigeria and around the world by recycling plastics into higher value products such as the first shoe polish made in Nigeria, PUP shoe polish and PUP card.

Tompa, on the other hand, converts fresh tomatoes into powder to cope with farmers’ losses due to agricultural insecurities, wastage of tomatoes, drought, pest attacks and long-distance transport in local communities such as Bomo and Samaru.

Enactus Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria team was also recognized at the event as winners of

the Team Ambassador Challenge for 2022.

According to the Special Projects and Communications Manager, Enactus Nigeria, Janice Akpobaro, “This initiative has been put in place to challenge the Enactus student teams to show how excited they are about the Enactus Nigeria National Competition 2022 , the Enactus program, the impact on them and the Nigerian society as a whole by creating video sketches which were shared on all of Enactus Nigeria’s social media platforms to determine the video sketch with the highest engagements on social networks.

Six teams of Enactus students, namely Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Calabar, Babcock University, Tai Solarin University of Education, Uyo University and Bayero Kano University have participated in this challenge and Enactus Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria won with over 10,000 social media engagements.
