Ministry of Sports holds first U-18 basketball championships in July – The Sun Nigeria
The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has announced that it will launch the Under-18 Basketball Championships from July 27-30 with a view to ensuring greater youth participation in the sport.
Mr. Mohammed Manga, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, made this known in a statement in Abuja.
Manga said the Minister, Sunday Dare, recently inaugurated an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the development of youth and national league basketball following the country’s withdrawal from international competitions.
“The committee has been tasked with creating a youth basketball league and a national league to help develop home players to provide a pool of players.
“The players will represent the country in international events after the withdrawal period.
“The committee has adjusted the date of the U-18 basketball championships, originally scheduled for June 15 to July 30, while the finals will be held from August 8 to August 14, 2023,” he said.
This is to give the committee ample opportunity to study, rethink and restructure the logistical and organizational arrangements.
According to him, the change will allow the committee to ensure that states are properly informed and prepared for full participation.
“To this end, the best athletes and exceptional coaches selected from the championships will form the core of the U-18 national teams.
“They will be camped between August 14 and 21 ahead of subsequent development programs to support the core development policy for the game being finalized,” he said.
Manga said the committee will hold clinics for coaches, referees, match commissioners and table official clinics from July 3-5.
He said the clinic would hold special sessions for young coaches and referees who are expected to play a crucial role in developing the game from the grassroots.
