No.4 Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) Couldn’t get over an injury to starting quarterback Conner Harrell and the Warriors saw their 27-game winning streak interrupted with a 24-21 loss to Hoover (Ala.) . Harrell did not return in the second half and the Buccaneers overcame a 21-10 halftime deficit and shut out the back-to-back 7A state champions 14-0 in the final 24 minutes. Hoover senior quarterback Bennett Meredith found Jabari Gaines eight yards with 14 seconds left for the game-winning score.

The victory secured the Region 3 7A title for the Bucs as they head to the playoffs with a perfect 10-0 and join the MaxPreps Top 25 standings on Monday.

There are huge high school football games this week involving the MaxPreps Top 25 teams, but none bigger than No.1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) Vs. No.8 Servite (Anaheim, Calif. ) Saturday at the Santa Ana Bowl. The Monarchs have won nine straight wins over their Trinity League rival and are winning by an average margin of 41.3 points per game this season.

The Friars did not lag at any point in their first eight games and topped the opposition 399-90. You have to go back to 2011 to find the last time Servite defeated the Monarchs. Mater Dei owns the 41-17-2 series advantage with the first meeting in 1961 and went 28-3-1 under head coach Bruce Rollinson.

Dillard (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) Gave No.15 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) All he could handle, but a blocked basket returned for a Raiders touchdown turned out to be the difference. The Panthers were looking for a 24-yard field goal with less than four minutes left to tie the game, but the Raiders blocked it and returned it for an 80-yard lead to give them a 23-13 lead.

The St. John’s (Washington, DC) number 24 improved to 7-0 with a relentless 14-7 victory over WCAC rival DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.). It was the Cadets’ sixth victory in seven games against the Cerfs. Next up is a matchup against Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) On October 30.

Number 11 Chandler (Arizona) won his 43rd straight game with a 26-7 victory over Queen Creek. After trailing 7-6 at halftime, the Wolves shut out the Bulldogs 20-0 in the second half. Kyion Grayes made his season debut and added a 55-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter to freeze the game.

No.6 Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ) is looking to improve to 8-0 and take his son a very difficult side from Seton Hall Prep (West Orange) whose only loss came in overtime to St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City). This is one of three games on Saturday involving the MaxPreps Top 25 teams, the third being No.25 Central (Miami) against North Miami Beach.
