After intense competition from many international competitors in Milan, Italy, the world has three new coffee champions, including 2021 World Barista Champion Diego Campos from Colombia.

Switzerland’s Matt Winton won the 2021 World Cup Brewing Championship title, and Australia’s Kyoungha (Charlie) Chu took first place in the 2021 World Cup Taster Championship.

The events, coordinated by the World Coffee Events group of the Specialty Coffee Association, were held in conjunction with the HOSTMilano Coffee & Hospitality & Commerce Fair. All three world championship events have been put on hold in 2020 due to event cancellations related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each of the three competitions took place in front of an in-person crowd in Milan, while broadcasting in real time around the world.

2019 World Barista Champion Jooyeon Jeon of South Korea is 2021 Champion Diego Campos, three-time Colombian Barista Championship winner at 31, roaster Amor Perfecto, owner of Diamante coffee farm and passionate advocate of Colombian coffee .

In a short impromptu speech after winning the competition, draped in the yellow, blue and red Colombian flag, Campos thanked his compatriots for their support.

“Wow, wow, wow, I can’t believe it… This is my country,” Campos said, raising the flag. “I love my country; I love Colombian coffee. This is for you, Colombia. This is for you – all the farmers, all the families, all the pickers, all the hard work. Amor Perfecto, for my family, for everyone who supported me. Thank you very much. “

Champion United States barista and Onyx Coffee Lab co-owner Andrea Allen placed second in the global competition with a routine that combines exquisite coffees from Colombia with the concept of reclaiming cuteness and sensory connections lost during of the pandemic.

It should be noted that the vast majority of the 16 finalists from all three events are men, which maintains a gender representation gap at the highest levels of these international events since their inception. Also of note: Martin Shabaya from Kenya became the first barista representing an African country to participate in the final round of the World Barista Championship.
