Food scientist Hettiarachchy named member of American Oil Chemists’ Society


Hettiarachchy is a member of the American Oil Chemists’ Society, the Institute of Food Technologists, and the International Academy of Food Science and Technology.

Navam Hettiarachchy, an academic professor of protein chemistry in the Department of Food Sciences at the University of Arkansas, has been made a fellow of the American Oil Chemists’ Society.

Hettiarachchy is a faculty member at Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, and a researcher and scientist at the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of the U of A System Division of Agriculture.

AOCS advances the science and technology of oils, fats, proteins, surfactants and related materials to enrich the lives of people around the world. To be considered, applicants must have at least 15 years of continuous membership in AOCS and have outstanding achievement in science and / or exceptionally important service to society or the profession, including in fields of research, industrial achievements, leadership, education, administration, communication or regulatory affairs.

Hettiarachchy will be presented with a plaque and Fellow medal at the AOCS 2022 Annual Meeting and Exhibition in May.

AOCS provides current and emerging information and disseminates research results on oils, fats, lipids, proteins, surfactants and related materials through meetings, publications and an online presence; develops and maintains analytical methods used in global trade and research, performs proficiency testing, provides reference material and coordinates with other standards developers; facilitates and strengthens interaction between professionals; and collaborates with other scientific societies and related organizations to promote the advancement of science.

Hettiarachchy is also a member of the Institute of Food Technologists and the International Academy of Food Science and Technology.

Hettiarachchys’ current research focuses on its strategies developed and implemented for high impact research for a diverse integrated chemistry-structure-function-functionality of dietary proteins and bioactive peptides, and the added value to co-products of industry, currently shifting to additive manufacturing of 3D ink printing of edible films enriched with vegetable protein and healthy food products. She is a resource professor at the Asian Productivity Organization, sponsored by Japan, and has trained professors and scientists in food science and agricultural value added for participants from 17 countries on multiple occasions.

She has served as president of the IFT-American Association of Food Scientists for the Indian Subcontinent, chaired the poster competition, and served on the advisory board. She is also a director of the Phi Tau Sigma Honor Society of the IFT and sits on the awards committee. His leadership has led to many IFT student experiences at Bumpers College, including first places in national product development competitions as well as 11 regional champions and two national champions at IFT varsity bowl competitions.
