DH Lescombes Winery wins World of Malavasia awards
DEMING – In the heart of the Mediterranean region, the “World of Malvasia” competition in Croatia is held every year to bring together some of the best varieties of Malvasia wines from around the world. In Croatia, Malvasia varieties are considered a native variety with strong ties to the land. In New Mexico, the Lescombes family has been growing the award-winning Malvasia Bianca for over thirty years. In particular, their New Mexico-grown St. Clair Malvasia Bianca has won over 39 awards, including 12 gold medals in various national and international competitions.
It seems that the Croatian judges accepted and recognized the quality of St. Clair Malvasia Bianca with a score of 90 points and added another gold medal to the collection, the only medal awarded to an American winery.
“Malvasia Bianca grows very well here,” said Melissa Porter, winemaker at Lescombes Family Vineyards. “Our hot, dry climate brings out beautiful aromas of spices and perfumes.”

The World of Malvasia rating is an annual event on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia bringing together the best Malvasia wines in the world. The judges are made up of high-level international experts who evaluate the wines according to the strict provisions of the contest rules in addition to the provisions of the International Organization of Vine and Wine, based in Paris, France.
