Alaska high school football playoffs start this weekend

Friday night lights will shine on 10 teams hoping to finish the football season as state champions this weekend when the First National Bowl playoffs begin.

Five of the eight games in the first round of the Divisions I, II and III playoffs are scheduled for Friday, with the other three taking place on Saturday afternoon.

Three of the four Division II and III playoff semifinal games are scheduled for Friday, starting with a 4 p.m. game in Soldotna, where the Stars begin their quest for a ninth consecutive title by hosting North Pole in a division II. .

Eagle River will travel to Lathrop for the other Division II semi-final, which kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday.

In Division III, the two semi-final matches are Friday. The 2019 Houston Hawks champion will face the Monroe Rams in a 6 p.m. game at Fairbanks and the Kenai Kardinals will travel to Mat-Su for a 7 p.m. game against the undefeated Redington Huskies.

In the eight-team Division I playoffs, there are two games on Friday and two games on Saturday.

On Friday, the 2019 champion South Wolverines will face the West Eagles at West High and the Colony Knights will host the Bartlett Golden Bears. Both matches start at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the undefeated Juneau Huskies will host the winless Dimond Lynx at 3 p.m. in Juneau and the East Thunderbirds will host the Service Cougars at 4 p.m. in Anchorage. The Thunderbirds were the winners of last year’s Anchorage School District playoffs, which took place after the state‘s playoffs were canceled due to COVID-19.

The Division II winners and the Division III winners will advance to the State Championship games on October 16 at Service High. The Division III match is scheduled to start at noon, followed by the Division II final at 4 p.m.

The Division I winners will advance to the semi-finals from October 15-16. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, October 22.
